Globalizing Chaos... from the Houthi Militia to Europe

A comparison between the two corridors reveals different actors and a common effect: Iran exerts pressure from the position of a besieged state, while the terrorist Houthi militia exerts it from the position of the group that has kidnapped Yemen and its institutions and resources. The simultaneity of the turmoil narrows the alternatives and multiplies the risks, making the security of the Red Sea and the Gulf an issue that is directly connected to the international economy, which is absent from partial approaches to the crisis.

Yemenis Are the Biggest Victims of the Houthis

Targeting Saudi airports and civilian facilities, and the killing and wounding of travelers, while pilgrims and civilians were passing through airport terminals, does not merely represent a new round in the trajectory of escalation led by the terrorist Houthi militia, but rather constitutes another chapter in the madness of a renegade group that kidnapped Yemen and brutalized Yemenis and subjected them to the worst suffering, then moved its armed project beyond the borders, until civilian airports, travelers and economic facilities became part of its target bank.

Support for the Legitimate Government to Restore "Happy Yemen"

And here lies one of the cruelest paradoxes of the Yemeni war: the international community, with the support of Saudi Arabia, is paying the cost of rescuing Yemeni society without discrimination, while the militia diverts all its resources toward stoking the war, recruiting children and repressing everyone under its control, for the levies, extortions, taxes and shadow economy do not all go to building a school or a hospital or providing a job, but to re-polarization and mobilization, and here is the paradox...

The Yemeni Question Has Become an International Security Issue

The question that many commentators and researchers who are not specialists in the region ask today is: how did a small group that emerged from the mountains of Saada turn into a disruptive militia that possesses rockets and drones, threatens international shipping routes and cities and civilian infrastructure, and even dares to target the Two Holy Mosques, the most sacred places on earth and the qibla of more than one and a half billion Muslims? This is a question that cannot be reduced to an article, but the more important question in my view is another that is directly related to what the situation has become: who made this militia?

The Terrorism That Changed Its Shape

The first reintroduced Hamza bin Laden via a special recording for the occasion of 11 September, and the second still has a multi-language media apparatus that periodically produces rhetoric attempting to capitalize on the chaos, to re-recruit and to polarize, and both were able to change the geography away from the usual areas of tension, shifting centrality to Africa, and especially the Sahel, Somalia and West Africa; where state fragility, local conflicts and open borders provide suitable environments for repositioning and mobilization.
