Al-Ahram

Religion and Transformations of the State

Here, authority becomes a "complete" protective wall for the individual, establishes a constitutional sovereignty reconciled with identity, and rejects the revival of any "theocratic rule". This proposition dismantles the structure of the religious theocratic state, and strips its clerics of the monopoly on legislation. Indeed, it cleanses sharia of the miserable reduction to the fiqh of punishments alone or social classifications that differentiate between citizens, transforming it instead into a system of equal human rights guaranteed by modern civil institutions.

After the Fundamentalist and Secular State "3"

So let us assume implicitly that one of the two must throw the other into the sea! It would be more appropriate for us to ask a more practical, useful question: how do we establish a modern state that recognizes that religion has a real presence in people’s lives, without allowing an authority or group to claim that it is the exclusive agent of heaven? And how do we protect the independence of politics, without turning secularism into a new creed with its own priests and hierarchs?! History teaches us that man hardly frees himself from "dogma" before hastening to install another in its place!
